FFXIV Keybound Brawler Backlash: Keyboard Rule and Gender-Locked Glamour

FFXIV's Keybound Brawler Is Already Pissing People Off — and It Doesn't Even Launch Until October 28

On October 21 Square Enix showed off Keybound Brawler, the new Gold Saucer typing attraction. Within two days the conversation had moved from "a typing minigame, sure, why not" to "why is the glamour gender-locked." It opens on October 28 and runs until Patch 8.0, so there's a real decision to make here. Below you get both sides of the argument in full, plus the complete MGC price list nobody has bothered to lay out in one place.

First, the timeline — a lot of the arguing is people working from different information

Keybound Brawler isn't a throwaway seasonal distraction. It was on stage at the Berlin Fan Festival in July, with Naoki Yoshida and FF7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi presenting it together. It's the opening act of the FF7 Remake crossover, which continues through Evercold with an eight-player raid series called Beyond the Lifestream.

So this is the first beat of a six-month crossover, not a minigame Square Enix can quietly let die.

Which means the loudest week of complaining happened before anyone could actually play it. People weren't arguing about whether it's fun. They were arguing about two restrictions written into the announcement that nobody could test yet.

Complaint one: it requires a keyboard, and a controller won't do

Square Enix is blunt about this. A keyboard is required. Gamepads and on-screen keyboards are explicitly unsupported.

The objection isn't "I can't afford a keyboard." It's that the ratio feels wrong.

FFXIV has been the gold standard for controller support for over a decade — the cross hotbar is how a huge share of the playerbase actually plays. And the Switch 2 version only arrived on August 4, bringing in another wave of players who have never plugged a keyboard into a console. The Gold Saucer has always been the one place in the game you go to breathe: no rotation to execute, no wipe to recover from, no shopping list. Putting a hardware gate on a room inside the breather room is what rubs people the wrong way, and the cost of the keyboard genuinely isn't the point. It's that optional comfort content suddenly has an entry fee that isn't gil.

The defense is just as concrete.

The activity is literally typing. It isn't an artificial restriction bolted onto something that would otherwise work on a pad — the input is the mechanic. A basic USB keyboard costs almost nothing and every supported console accepts one. And it's optional: skipping it costs you no story, no combat power, no progression. As one common reply puts it, if you don't want to buy a keyboard, you were never the target audience for this one.

The part actually worth reading is what players proposed instead.

The recurring suggestions: controller button prompts that map letters to face and shoulder buttons, calling the system's on-screen keyboard, or a separate "simple input" mode that keeps the speed-and-accuracy tension without demanding physical hardware. As of writing, Square Enix has said nothing about changing any of it.

Complaint two: the two outfits are locked by gender

This is the one that turned a mild annoyance into a fight.

The reward list contains two sets: Avalanche Brawler's and Avalanche Leader's. Per the announced rewards and multiple outlets covering them, the first is wearable only by female characters and the second only by male characters. A male Viera cannot wear the sleeveless brawler set. Nobody can wear across the line.

In a community where "glamour is the endgame" is only half a joke, that lands harder than a keyboard requirement.

The objection isn't "I want to cosplay a specific character." It's that the direction reversed.

In 2020, Yoshida announced the gender restriction on wedding attire was being removed. Before Endwalker, the maid outfit restriction went too, right around the time male Viera became an option. The whole cosmetic system has spent years moving in one direction: fewer locks. Now the highest-profile crossover in recent memory adds two back. The reaction wasn't confusion — it was "you said you'd stopped doing this."

The defense: these two outfits were built around two specific characters.

Tifa and Barret have obvious gender presentation, and forcing either set onto the opposite frame reads as a costume rather than a reference. Keeping the lock is arguably fidelity. And it's cosmetic — zero stats, zero gameplay impact. Don't like it, don't redeem it.

The structural ask: give feedback inside the event window, not after it.

This is the most useful thing to come out of the whole argument. MGC is only earnable and only spendable during the collaboration. If Square Enix "listens to feedback" and unlocks the sets in February, everyone who already redeemed has stopped caring and everyone who started late has missed it. If you want the change to mean anything, it has to happen between now and January.

As of writing, Square Enix has not explained either restriction or committed to revisiting them.

Setting the argument aside: what the event actually gives you

MGC stands for Manderville Gold Saucer Credits. You earn it only by playing Keybound Brawler and you can spend it only during the event. The trader is at Keybound Square X:6.2 Y:6.0.

Here's the good news: every participant earns MGC, not just the winner. Slow typists still get there, it just takes longer.

One caveat: Keybound Coffer is the single most expensive item on the board at 910, and Square Enix hasn't said what's inside it. Set expectations before you buy your first one.

Unlock requirements: the bottleneck is the quest chain, not your typing speed

  1. Reach level 15 and finish It Could Happen to You — the Gold Saucer unlock, picked up in Ul'dah, Steps of Nald at X:9.6 Y:9.0 from the Well-Heeled Youth. Its prerequisite is one of the three city-state envoy quests.
  1. Pick up the limited-time quest Keyward Bound inside the Gold Saucer at X:5.4 Y:7.0 from the Catlike Mammet.
  1. That's it. Play, earn MGC, spend it at Keybound Square.

Two things worth knowing:

Where glamour players actually spend money — and it isn't MGC

MGC buys you the piece. Making it look good is a separate budget.

The crossover hands you loose parts: a top, halfgloves, bottoms, boots, an earring, plus sunglasses. Turning those into something coherent with the rest of your wardrobe means dyes to fix the palette, glamour prisms to store the plate, and frequently a market board trip for the pieces that aren't on the reward list — hats and hands are the usual gaps.

None of that comes from MGC. MGC is a closed event currency; the glamour system runs on gil. And this event specifically pushes people back into that system: everyone who unlocks a new set wants to wear it immediately, and the dyeing, filling and plating that follows is all gil out the door.

If your next three months are "wear the new set properly and come out of it with a head start on 8.0," front-loading some gil is less work than farming it later.

How to play the next three months

The event runs until Patch 8.0. Evercold is confirmed for January 2027, and the Tokyo Fan Festival on October 31 – November 1 will reveal the second new job and more of the expansion. That leaves you roughly three months wedged between the end of 7.57 and the start of 8.0.

1. Grab Keyward Bound on day one. It's a limited-time quest. Accepting it takes seconds, but forgetting it takes nothing at all — the same thing happened to plenty of people during the Fall Guys collaboration.

2. Decide your MGC target before you start grinding. Mount and minion is 690. That's an afternoon. Clearing all 6,380 is a three-month project that competes with everything else in the game. Pick the number first.

3. Build your 8.0 bankroll while you're there. The most expensive things on day one of an expansion are always materials, food and starter gear. With no new raid tier pressing on you between now and January, this is the best saving window of the year.

FAQ

When does Keybound Brawler end? At the release of Patch 8.0. Evercold is confirmed for January 2027; the exact date is expected at the Tokyo Fan Festival. The event returns as a special event at irregular intervals afterward, but MGC can't be earned or spent outside the event window.

Can I play it on a controller? No. A keyboard is required, and gamepads and on-screen keyboards don't work. Console players need a physical keyboard — wired USB is more reliable.

Can free trial players participate? Yes. Level 15, complete It Could Happen to You to unlock the Gold Saucer, then pick up Keyward Bound.

Are the outfits really gender-locked? Based on the announced reward names and multiple outlets covering the details, Avalanche Brawler's is female-only and Avalanche Leader's is male-only. Square Enix hasn't explained why or said whether it will change. If it bothers you, say so during the event — a fix that arrives after the rewards stop dropping is worth very little.

Does MGC carry over to the next run? No. It's earned and spent within this collaboration only.

How much MGC clears the whole board? 6,380. Mount and minion alone is 690.

How does this connect to 8.0? It's the opening of the FF7 Remake crossover. The eight-player raid series Beyond the Lifestream continues through Evercold, with the first bosses expect
