AION 2 Global Launch Guide: Pre-Download Tonight, Stress Tests Sept 17 & 19, Free Launch Oct 5 — Eight Classes, Aerial Combat & Your First 40 Hours

Published: September 16, 2026 | Category: Game News | All times listed in JST

Why AION 2 Is the One Game Worth Prepping This September

September 2026 is the most crowded MMO month in five years — Valheim hits 1.0, RuneScape: Dragonwilds exits Early Access, Dune: Awakening lands on consoles, Warframe ships a new expansion. But if you only have bandwidth to prep one of them, the answer is AION 2.

The case is simple: AION 2 pairs an old IP with a genuinely next-gen build. The AION franchise has been doing "aerial combat" since 2008 — those wings were the whole genre's original hook — and AION 2 rebuilds everything on Unreal Engine 5. The world is 36× the size of the original, verticality is real, and flight is no longer a travel gimmick — it is the central combat mechanic.

The timing is even tighter. Client pre-download opens tonight at 22:00 JST (September 16). That makes September 17 a paid-server open beta (stress test), September 30 the Founder's Pack head start, and October 5 the global free-to-play launch. If you act now, you can be on day-one.

Section 1 — One-Minute Spec Sheet

Game AION 2
Developer / Publisher NCSoft
Engine Unreal Engine 5
Type Next-gen MMORPG (action aerial combat + faction RvR)
Story timeline 200 years after the original; the world is still Atreia
Factions Elyos (Light) / Asmodians (Dark), each with their own starting zone
Global free launch October 5, 2026 (F2P)
Founder's Pack head start September 30, 2026 (5 days early)
Stress tests September 17 / September 19 (two sessions, 6 hours each, open to everyone)
Pre-download September 16, 22:00 JST
Platform PC exclusive (Steam + NC's PURPLE launcher)
Console version "In development"; platform and date unannounced; cross-platform play not guaranteed
Launch classes 8 (Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster / Elementalist, Cleric, Chanter)
Level cap ~45 at global launch (KR/TW servers, after Chapter 1, opened to 50)
Dungeons 200+ variants (solo / 5-man / 10-man tiers)
PvP 1v1, 4v4, 8v8 arenas + Rifting + Abyss large-scale faction warfare
Main currency Kinah (in-game) + Quna (cash shop), with player-driven exchange
Subscription wall Marketplace and Kinah↔Quna swaps require a Pass subscription (~$12–15/month)
Launch languages 10 languages (EN, DE, FR, ES, PT, …); Simplified Chinese is not in the launch set
Korean launch November 2025
One-liner: AION 2 turns the original's iconic wings into the combat system itself, pairs it with a 36× UE5 world and 200+ dungeons, and is the most "prepare now" MMORPG of late 2026.

Section 2 — Full Launch Timeline (Where Are We Right Now?)

AION 2's global launch isn't a single switch — it ships in four stages. Today (September 16) sits on the first marker.

September 16, 22:00 JST
Client pre-download opens — tonight

Open to everyone. Install tonight, and you skip the line on test and launch day. The client is around 100 GB — start the download now.

September 17, 22:00 → September 18, 04:00
Stress Test #1 (6 hours)

Open to everyone, no key, no signup. The point is server load and connection stability.

September 19, 04:00 → 10:00
Stress Test #2 (6 hours)

Day-1 progress carries over to Day-2. Level cap during tests is 37, with some economy systems disabled.

September 30
Founder's Pack head start (5 days early)

Anyone who bought a Founder's Pack gets in. This is the first time global players can play the live build.

October 5
Global free-to-play launch

Free for everyone. All PvE content unlocked.

⚠️ Four traps to know before you log in:
  • Playtime is capped at 6 hours per day per player — 12 hours total across both tests.
  • All test progress is wiped at test end; nothing carries into the head start or launch.
  • Steam users must uninstall the Playtest App after the test, then download the live client separately for Sep 30 / Oct 5. Mixing them causes conflicts.
  • NC has not announced exact opening times for Sep 30 or Oct 5 — only the dates. Watch official channels on launch morning.
Can't pick a class? Since September 15, the official AION 2 site has had a Class Diagnostic quiz — answer a few questions and it recommends a class with character art and weapon details.

Section 3 — Why Prep Now: Three Reasons

Reason 1 — Flight Becomes Combat, Not Just Travel

The original's wings were trailblazing but limited: hit empty on the flight gauge and you were grounded. AION 2 reworks the loop:

  • Open-area free flight across the entire map, not just designated "flight zones."
  • The Abyss is a true 3D battlefield — the sky is constant territory, not a transition zone.
  • A new Momentum Gauge lets advanced players chain dive → cancel → drop into aerial combos and convert altitude directly into horizontal speed, creating real openings in air combat. Almost no other MMO has tried this.
  • Vertical spatial tracking — the game evaluates your 3D position in real time, so flanking an enemy from above or behind can land a critical bonus. Height, angle, and facing are all combat variables.

Reason 2 — Combat Goes from "Stand and Cast" to Action Reads

AION 2 explicitly drops traditional tab-targeting in favor of skill-based action combat:

  • Active Perfect Block / Perfect Parry — successful parries break enemy pressure and open an immediate counter window.
  • Skill chain combos — skills can be linked in custom orders, buildable as macros for high-difficulty PvE or large-scale RvR.
  • Customizable Stigma slots — for example, a Spiritmaster can switch elemental summons mid-fight to counter a Boss's resistance. "Change school on the fly" depth is AION 2's biggest differentiator from generic skin-swap MMOs.

Reason 3 — Content Volume Is Genuinely Large

NC has officially confirmed "200+ dungeons," tiered as solo challenges, 5-man parties, and 10-man raids (the 200+ count treats each dungeon variant separately; the unique-count number is lower, but the volume easily lasts hundreds of hours). On PvP, 1v1 / 4v4 / 8v8 arenas are all live, alongside Rift content and large-scale Abyss faction warfare.

Section 4 — All Eight Classes: How to Pick and Not Regret It

AION 2 launches with eight classes — a clean Trinity (Tank / Healer / DPS) plus a hybrid support slot. Do not trust any "tier list" right now — the global client doesn't even have its final English class names locked in (Spiritmaster and Elementalist are both used by different outlets), and balance numbers won't be confirmed until live. Pick by the role you want to play, not by a tier column.

Gladiator
Melee DPS / Off-tank

Two-handed greatsword, wide AoE swings, balance of damage and durability. One of the safest new-player choices and an excellent trash clearer.

Templar
Main tank

Sword & board, threat generation, AoE mitigation, control. High HP, always in demand, new-player friendly.

Assassin
Melee burst

Stealth, mobility, backstabs, big burst in short windows. High risk, high reward — top-tier PvP assassination feel.

Ranger
Ranged physical

Kiting, traps, high single-target damage, strong mobility — fits almost any content. Slightly gear-hungry.

Sorcerer
Ranged magic

Classic glass cannon, fire/ice combos, strong burst and AoE. Survival is the trade.

Spiritmaster
Summoner / control

Multi-element summon management, can deal, heal, or taunt, strong crowd control. One of the best solo-leveling experiences.

Cleric
Main healer

Direct + HoT heals, dispels, rezzes, with backup DPS. Groups always need one.

Chanter
Support / healer

Mantras for team buffs, shields, sub-heals, plus a long-staff melee combo. The team's engine.

Ninth class caveat: Brawler was added to KR / TW servers after their Chapter 1 patch, but it is not part of the global launch roster. Don't pre-plan a Brawler build based on KR/TW guides.

Quick Pick-by-Goal

Your Goal Recommended Classes
Safest for new players Templar, Cleric, Gladiator (clear roles, forgiving)
Most comfortable solo leveling Spiritmaster, Gladiator, Ranger
Most wanted for group PvE Cleric, Templar, Chanter (tanks / heals / supports always in demand)
Strong in PvP Assassin, Gladiator, Ranger, Spiritmaster, Sorcerer
"I only want to tank" Templar
"I only want to heal" Cleric

Section 5 — The Kinah Economy: Why It's the Lifeblood of AION 2

AION 2's progression curve eats more resources than most people expect. And every resource flow eventually narrows down to one name: Kinah.

What Kinah Actually Pays For

  • Gear upgrades — bumping item grade, socketing Manastones, paying for high-level enhancement attempts
  • World marketplace — cross-server Auction House for trading gear, rare drops, and crafting mats
  • Crafting & consumables — buying base mats from NPCs; stocking up flight scrolls, potions, food buffs
  • Mounts & mobility upgrades — buying mounts or upgrading flight / move speed
  • PvP prep — arena pots, consumables, gear repairs
Week one is the gear-curve window
AION 2 progression touches Kinah at almost every step. Players who start with Kinah can skip the most tedious low-tier material farming and spend their time in dungeons and arenas. PVPBank offers AION 2 Kinah with fast, secure delivery.

Dual-Currency Design — Kinah + Quna

  • Kinah = in-game core currency, earned from dungeons, dailies, and Rifting
  • Quna = cash-shop currency
  • The two connect through a player-driven marketplace: F2P players can list their farmed Kinah on the market to convert to Quna; players who want to save time can spend Quna to buy Kinah

⚠️ The Subscription Catch You Need to Know Up Front

This is the biggest gotcha in AION 2 and the most-discussed community concern:

The Auction House and Kinah↔Quna exchange both require an active Pass subscription (~$12–15/month). In NC's own business model terms, a free player "essentially only holds the Kinah that drops naturally from leveling and dungeon clears" — there is no way to liquidate that production on the market.

It gets more important than that: the subscription also affects PvE rewards. The Steam Founder's Pack page explicitly notes that the 30-day Pass included in every pack includes "increased dungeon reward selection counts." So the subscription isn't just "can you use the market" — it directly affects your farming efficiency.

Bottom line: if you plan to play AION 2 long term, the Pass is effectively a monthly fee. Bake it into your budget before you hit level 40 and realize your gear can't progress.

Enhancement Is (Relatively) Forgiving

Good news: enhancement doesn't wreck gear the way old-school Korean MMOs did. +1 to +10 is a 100% success. Beyond +10, failures are possible, but the system uses a pity matrix — each failure banks luck points, and your gear is never permanently destroyed. (Note: NC has only published enhancement rates for the Korean version. Global numbers aren't public yet; treat any "exact %" you see today as speculation.)

Section 6 — Your First 40 Hours: What to Actually Do

1. Main Story First — Don't Skip Quests

Stay on the main quest line for your early levels. AION 2's core systems (Stigma, Feathers, Monoliths, Pets, Arcana) unlock through the story. Skipping quests to grind mobs leaves a load of system features locked behind your progress. Global launch level cap is roughly 45.

2. Don't Ignore the "Boring-Looking" Systems Early

These systems don't pop pre-cap, but they compound into permanent power:

  • Sealed Dungeons + Divination Boards — daily dungeon-specific materials feed a web of divination boards that unlock account-wide permanent stats (attack, crit resistance, hit).
  • Genius Insight — a "sub-level" matrix. Killing bosses and hitting server milestones bank points you can invest into account-wide passive bonuses (material yield up, teleport costs down, gold drop rate up).
  • Pets / mounts — defeated monsters can be unlocked as pets or mounts. Collecting and leveling them adds ongoing combat power, not just cosmetics.

3. Faction Choice Locks You In Socially

Elyos and Asmodians each have their own starting zones and only collide through RvR content. Cross-faction grouping is not possible. Decide with your friends before you log in — picking the "wrong" side means rerolling on day one.

4. Pre-Launch Checklist

  • Tonight (after Sep 16, 22:00 JST) start the pre-download — don't wait until test day to pull 100 GB
  • Decide your faction (coordinate with friends)
  • Take the Class Diagnostic quiz on the official site
  • Make sure you have an SSD with at least 100 GB free
  • Decide on the Founder's Pack (the Sep 30 head start is pack-buyer only)

Section 7 — Founder's Pack: Worth It? How to Pick

AION 2's base game is free, so the Founder's Pack is essentially "5-day early access + cosmetic / convenience extras." Three tiers:

Tier Price Contents
Standard $24.99 5-day early access + 30-day Pass + Daeva's Campaign Supply Chest + exclusive title "Vanguard of Atreia"
Deluxe $49.99 Everything in Standard + extra costume skins + weapon skins
Ultimate $99.99 Everything in Deluxe + more cosmetic props + Black Dragon pet + Blazing Sun Wings

Buying Recommendations

  • "I just want to play 5 days early" → Standard. In an MMO launch window, 5 extra days means first wave of levels, first batch of gear, first guild slots — worth far more than $25.
  • "I want cosmetics and wings" → Ultimate's Blazing Sun Wings is the most direct cosmetic payoff, but these are all cosmetic, not power.
  • "I'm in no rush" → Skip. You can wait for the Oct 5 free launch and still play everything; the pack only gates the 5-day head start and the cosmetics.

Section 8 — PC Spec Requirements

AION 2's move to UE5 raises the hardware floor meaningfully. NC strongly recommends installing on an SSD.

Component Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)
CPU Intel Core i5-10500 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Intel Core i7-11700 / AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
RAM 8 GB 16 GB
GPU NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 470 NVIDIA RTX 2070 / AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
DirectX 12 12
Storage 100 GB available (SSD recommended) 100 GB available (SSD recommended)

Two practical notes: First, 8 GB of RAM is the "boot it up" floor — AION 2 has a 36× world and large-scale same-screen RvR fights, so 16 GB is the realistic target. Second, the launch set has 10 languages but not Simplified Chinese (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.) — make sure you're comfortable with the interface language set before launch.

Section 9 — AION 2 Launch Period: Where Do Your Old MMO Assets Go?

Every major MMO launch pulls a wave of players who "swap games" — moving from their old MMO into the new one. There's a real-world problem with that: the gold and resources parked in your old account become zero when you leave.

If you already live in the MMO genre, AION 2's open beta window is exactly the right time to liquidate your old MMO assets and turn them into a starter fund for the new game. PVPBank offers AION 2 Kinah and currency services for many major MMOs:

AION 2 progression runs on Kinah
Gear upgrades, Manastones, marketplace trades, flight scrolls and potions — almost every step costs money. Stock up before launch week and skip the most tedious farming phase outright.

If you also play other MMOs, PVPBank covers their currencies and items as well:

Why PVPBank: 8+ years in the industry, hand-trained gold-farming teams + a global supply network, most orders delivered within minutes, 100% refund if your order is not delivered, 24/7 support.

Section 10 — FAQ

Q1: When can I actually play AION 2?

Three windows: Sep 17 & Sep 19 stress tests (free for everyone), Sep 30 Founder's Pack head start, Oct 5 global free-to-play launch.

Q2: Do I need a key or signup for the stress test?

No. No key, no signup — anyone eligible can join via Steam or PURPLE.

Q3: Does stress-test progress carry over?

No. Day-1 progress carries to Day-2, but everything is wiped at test end — it does not carry into the head start or launch.

Q4: Is AION 2 free?

The base game is free (F2P). The marketplace and Kinah↔Quna exchange require a Pass subscription (~$12–15/month), and the Pass also affects how many dungeon reward picks you can make.

Q5: Is there a console version?

NC has confirmed a console version is "in development," but platform and launch date are unannounced, and cross-platform play with PC isn't guaranteed. October's launch is PC only.

Q6: How many classes at launch? Is Brawler included?

8 classes at global launch. Brawler is currently on KR / TW servers (added after Chapter 1) and is not in the global launch roster.

Q7: What is the level cap?

Global launch starts at roughly 45. KR / TW opened to 50 after Chapter 1.

Q8: Which languages are supported?

10 languages at launch (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.). Simplified Chinese is not in the launch set.

Q9: Can my PC run it?

Minimum: i5-10500 / 8 GB / GTX 1050 Ti. For 36× world and large RvR, plan on 16 GB RAM + RTX 2070-class GPU on an SSD, with 100 GB free space.

Q10: Will enhancement destroy my gear?

No. +1 to +10 is guaranteed success. Beyond +10, even failures can't destroy your gear — pity points accumulate. (Source: KR version; global rates not yet published.)

Q11: Where can I play it?

PC via Steam or NC's PURPLE launcher. Regional servers cover North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Q12: Can I try AION 2 at Tokyo Game Show?

Yes. AION 2 will appear at Tokyo Game Show 2026 (September 17–21, Makuhari Messe), with a dedicated demo build on the show floor.

Closing: Three Practical Tips

First, download the client tonight. Pre-download opens Sep 16, 22:00 JST. A 100 GB client is not a 10-minute job. If you're aiming for day one, the download should already be running.

Second, don't stress about "best class." Even the English class names on global aren't locked, and every tier list today is a guess built off KR/TW data. Pick by the role you want to play — Templar if you want to tank, Cleric if you want to heal, Assassin if you want to burst. You'll still be happy 200 hours in.

Third, bake the subscription cost into your budget. AION 2 is free, but the market and currency exchange sit behind the Pass wall. Before launch, decide if you're planning to stick around — that's what makes the Standard pack's $24.99 (5-day head start + 30-day Pass) the most useful launch-window purchase.

The skies of Atreia have been waiting 200 years. This time, the wings are for fighting.

Prepare for the AION 2 Launch
Week-one gear curves decide the next few months of your play rhythm. Stock up on Kinah and skip the most tedious farming phase.
