Fresh Independent Economy · Rituals Sweep the Campaign · Wildwood Returns · Trial of Chaos Rework
⚡ One-Minute Overview
Grinding Gear Games officially announced Path of Exile 2's 0.5.5 patch during its GGG Live stream, alongside an all-new Flashback event: Forbidden Rites. This will be the final major event before the 1.0 full release (December 11): a brand-new independent economy, fresh level 1 characters only, while the current Runes of Aldur event realm remains open and untouched in parallel.
| Event Essentials | |
|---|---|
| Start Time | September 4, 1:00 PM PDT (September 5, 4:00 AM Beijing Time); standard server maintenance precedes the launch |
| Duration | About one month (through early October), bridging to ExileCon 2026 on November 7–8 and the 1.0 release on December 11 |
| How to Join | Select "Forbidden Rites" on the character selection screen → create a new level 1 character in a fresh, independent economy |
| Previous Event | All Runes of Aldur characters and items are preserved and remain fully playable |
| Event Content | Rituals, Wildwood's return, the Trial of Chaos rework, Abyssal Ravines, and Expeditions becoming a core mechanic |
| Challenge Rewards | 8 challenges → 4 exclusive account-bound cosmetic rewards + a keepsake hideout statue |
| Balance | Current build power levels carry over; the new Duelist class and large-scale balance changes are reserved for 1.0 |
🕯️ Core Mechanic: Rituals
The headline mechanic of Forbidden Rites is the return of Rituals. The influence of the King in the Mists and his followers has spread across all of Wraeclast, and the Nameless One performs dark ceremonies throughout the land — starting from Act 1, every campaign zone will spawn Ritual altars.
- How It Works: Defeat the monsters guarding the altar → activate the idol → slain enemies rise again for a rematch, while dangerous plague continuously threatens the ritual area.
- Tribute System: Kills within the Ritual circle earn Tribute, which you spend yourself on the rewards you want. Higher-difficulty Omens-style grand altars can contain bosses for back-to-back boss fights — or you can simply walk away.
- Big Party Improvement: Every player earns their own personal Tribute pool and picks their own rewards — no loot sniping, nobody left empty-handed.
- World Map Idol Clusters: Exploring the world map reveals clusters of special Ritual idols that drop Unique items; major ritual boss rooms in the campaign can even drop a guaranteed Unique, giving your leveling a welcome early power spike.
🌲 Wildwood Returns: High-Risk Endgame Farming
The Sacred Bloom dropped by Rituals can be used in Waypoint maps to open portals into the Wildwood. This is the event's most important endgame "juicing" mechanic.
- Timed Harvest: Entering the Wildwood starts a timed expedition where you track and collect three types of Wisps — Primal Wisps (upgrade magic monsters), Vivid Wisps (add modifiers to rare monsters), and Wild Wisps (raise item rarity of drops); with luck, you may find the rare Sacred Wisps.
- Release for Power: Release the Wisps back into your map to empower monsters and boost drop rarity — the higher the risk, the greater the reward.
- Golden Rule: Don't over-juice a map beyond what your character can survive. Strong builds use it to multiply profits; weaker ones should prioritize staying alive. Stacking all three Wisp types at once and then face-tanking empowered packs is the #1 way experienced players get wrecked.
🎲 Trial of Chaos: Massive Rework
The 0.5.5 rework of the Trial of Chaos has drawn the most praise from veteran players, addressing feedback accumulated throughout Early Access:
- Pausable Between Rooms: Leave mid-run and resume later — no more being forced into a single uninterrupted gauntlet.
- Streamlined Objectives: Most rooms now resolve through killing monsters; tedious tasks like escorting idols and implanting Soul Cores are gone.
- Wager Modifiers: New risk-reward choices — voluntarily raise the difficulty for better rewards, making every room a "play it safe or raise the stakes" decision.
- 30-Room Endgame Trial: The endgame version expands up to 30 rooms with escalating difficulty and rewards, and lets you collect all 3 Trialmaster fragments in a single run for a far more reliable boss-chase path.
- Shifted Rewards: Corrupted gear is no longer the centerpiece — rewards now focus on currency and Soul Cores, including new endgame Soul Cores.
🗺️ Other Major Updates
| Content | Details |
|---|---|
| Abyssal Ravines | Interconnected ravine regions randomly appear during Atlas exploration. Maps along the ravine contain Abysses — push through and drive back the Abyssal legions as rewards scale with progress; the final map always ends in an Abyss boss, giving the run a clear goal. |
| Expeditions Go Core | Expedition (the "logbook digging" mechanic) officially becomes a core permanent feature starting in Act 4; new Expedition-related Atlas passive options let you run multiple Expeditions per map. |
| Faster Stronghold Progression | After finishing the campaign, you can obtain another Arbiter of Order key to challenge an empowered version of the boss — defeating it auto-completes your remaining Stronghold progress, dramatically accelerating endgame unlocks. |
| Looking Ahead to 1.0 | The new Duelist class (with Bracing / Dust / Blood stances), large-scale balance changes, and new Ascendancies are all reserved for the 1.0 release on December 11; ExileCon 2026 takes place November 7–8 in Auckland. |
🏆 Challenges & Exclusive Rewards
Forbidden Rites features 8 challenges, with announced examples including completing Ritual encounters in the campaign, hunting specific rare monsters, and reaching level 90. Completing challenges unlocks 4 account-bound, permanent cosmetic rewards (usable in Standard, Hardcore, SSF, and all future events including 1.0):
There's also a commemorative hideout statue that grows increasingly elaborate as you complete more challenges — the event's most visible badge of honor. The full list of 8 challenges will be published alongside the launch-day patch notes.
A fresh economy = everyone starts from zero.
